A multi-generational house on a small site. In a densely populated area in the center of Tokyo, we thought about bringing nature into the interior of the building without being closed to the surrounding environment while protecting privacy.
商業地と静かな住宅地の間の狭小敷地に建つ2世帯住宅。
都心の密集地の建築に、周辺環境と隔絶させず内部に自然を呼び込むため、道路に面して簾のような役割のスキンガラスを上から吊り、その内側には必要な各部屋の他に外部・半外部空間を混在させた。
スキンガラスの内側に一歩はいると、実はそこは半外部の玄関ホール。その先は土間コートという外部がある。これらの他に各部屋へのアプローチとして様々な半外部空間を用意し、動線としてだけではなく各部屋の延長のような空間としても使用可能なものにした。
小さくならざるを得ない各部屋も、様々な方向からアクセスできる動線の存在や外部・半外部空間とのつなぎ方しだいで、閉塞感を感じさせない空間になりうると思う。
This multigenerational house is located on a small lot between a commercial area and a quiet residential district. In order to avoid completely isolating the interior from the crowded urban environment outside, as well as to invite nature inside the house, we hung a glass skin from the side of the building that faces the street. The skin functions similarly to the reed screens traditionally used in Japanese homes. Behind it, fully enclosed spaces mingle with partially and fully exterior spaces.
Just beyond the glass skin is a semi-exterior entrance hall, and beyond that is a fully open earthen-floored courtyard. A variety of other semi-exterior spaces lead to each room. These pathways can also be used as extensions of the rooms themselves.
Although each room is unavoidably quite small, the fact that they can be accessed from various directions and the manner in which they are linked to exterior and semi-exterior spaces prevents the residents from feeling claustrophobic while inside.
